Cargill Genealogy

 

GEN I

James CARGILL was born in 1754, and married Magdalen CLARK on the 20th December 1777 in Forfar. James and Magdalen had the following three children:

 

GEN II

  1. Helen – born 8th May 1778, Forfar.
  2. William – born 19th October 1780, Forfar. Married Magdalene Salmon on the 18th July 1807, Forfar. Died on the 6th October 1840, Forfar.
  3. Margaret – died on the 17th May 1786, Aughterforfar.

Magdalen died on the 15th January 1783 at Aughterforfar, James died sometime after 1786 as he registered the burial of his daughter Margaret.

 

GEN II

William CARGILL was born on the 19th Octover 1780 in Forfar to parents James Cargill and Magdalen Clark. William was a Weaving Manufacturer and Merchant by trade and married Magdalene SALMON, Milliner, born in 1789, on the 18th July 1807, Waltown, Forfar. William and Magdalene had the following seven children:

 

GEN III

  1. William – born 6th August 1808, Forfar. William was a Master Draper by trade and married Janet Millar Reid on the 6th Feb 1829 in Forfar. He died on the 30th June 1843 in Forfar.
  2. John – born 23rd April 1810, Forfar. Mason by trade, died on the 21st November 1889, Forfar.
  3. Ann – born 31st August 1816, Forfar. Died 8th April 1880, Kincardinshire.
  4. James Black – born 19th March 1822, Forfar.
  5. Charles – born 13th August 1824, Forfar
  6. Francis – born 17th August 1826, Forfar. Merchant & Draper. Died in 1911, Forfar.
  7. Joseph – born 22 August 1829, Forfar. Died on the 25th June 1835, Forfar.

William died on the 6th October 1840 in Forfar aged 59 years. In 1841 Magdalene was a widow living at East High Street, Forfar. Magdalene died on the 19th August 1843 in Forfar aged 54 years just one month after the death of her eldest son William.

 

GEN III

William CARGILL was born on the 6th August 1808 in Forfar to parents William Cargill and Magdalene Salmon. William was a Linen Weaver and Master Draper by trade and married Janet Millar REID on the 6th Feb 1829 in Forfar. Janet was born on the 10th August 1808 to parents John Reid and Helen Cameron. William and Janet had the following eight children:

  1. William – born 26th October 1829, Forfar. Died on the 23rd April 1842, Forfar.
  2. John – born 8th December 1830, Forfar. Mason. Married Marjory Thornton. Died on the 7th July 1870 at the Loch of Forfar, suicide by drowning.
  3. James – born 3rd November 1832, Forfar. Died on the 17th May 1835 from Scarlet Fever, Forfar.
  4. David – born 21st November 1834, Forfar. Drapers Assistant. Died in 1856, Forfar.
  5. James – born 8th June 1836, Forfar. Master Builder by trade, married Margaret Mitchell on the 24th April 1860 in Forfar. Died 5th May 1897, Forfar.
  6. Charles – born 9th Feb 1838, Forfar. Died on the 1st March 2841, Forfar.
  7. Janet – born 8th April 1840, Forfar. Married Falconer. Died in 1872, Forfar.
  8. Jean – born 1843, Forfar. Married Donald. Died in 1909, Forfar.

 

William and Janet lived in East High Street, Forfar. William died on the 30th June 1843 in Forfar aged just 34 years. Janet died on the 31st August 1864 at 145 East High Street, Forfar aged 57 years. She died of Phthisis ( tuberculosis ), and her son John was the informant.

 

GEN V

James CARGILL was born on the 8th June 1836 in Forfar to parents William Cargill and Janet Millar Reid. James was a Master Builder by trade and married Margaret MITCHELL on the 24th April 1860 in Forfar. Margaret was born on the 17th November 1837 in Forfar to parents Alexander Mitchell and Margaret Ritchie. James and Margaret has the following ten children:

 

GEN VI

  1. Alexander – born 22nd November 1860, Forfar. Master Builder by trade, married Jane Callendar on the 31st August 1887 in Forfar. Died on the 10th August 1901, Forfar.  See Callendar Genealogy.
  2. Jessie Reid – born 18th November 1862, Forfar. Dressmaker. Married Alan Calder, Banker, died on the 28th August 1940, Barry, Angus aged 78 years.
  3. Margaret Ritchie – born 27th August 1864, Forfar. Died 5th February 1885 from heart disease, Cargill Place, Forfar.
  4. James Mitchell – born 8th November 1866, Forfar. Died in 1867, Forfar.
  5. William – born 24th June 1869, Forfar. Builder.
  6. John – born 4th July 1871, 8 Green Street, Forfar. TWIN
  7. Mary Ann Cook – born 4th July 1871, 8 Green Street, Forfar. Drapers Assistant.  TWIN. Married Osler, died in 1899, Forfar aged 27 years.
  8. David – born 24th October 1872, Forfar. Died in 1877, Forfar.
  9. Frank – born 1876, Forfar.
  10. Charles Cook – born 1879, Forfar. Elimentary Teacher.

 

James and Margaret lived at East High Street, 28 Glamis Road,  8 Green Street, 17 Green Street and Canmore Park, Forfar.

James and his son Alexander built Canmore Park around 1888. James died on the 5th May 1897 at Canmore Park in Forfar. He died of vascular disease of the heart with Bright’s disease of the kidneys (kidney disease) , ending in Dropsey (swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water.) aged 60 years. His son Alexander was the informant.

Margaret died on the 23rd July 1898 at Canmore Park, Forfar. She died of Marasmus Perihepatitis  (severe malnutrition and wasting away, inflammation of the liver) aged 60 years, Alexander was the informant.

 

GEN VI

Alexander CARGILL was born on the 22nd November 1860 in Forfar to parents James Cargill and Margaret Mitchell. Alexander was a master Builder by trade and married Jane CALLANDER, Dressmaker on the 31st August 1887 in Forfar. Jane was born on the 22nd June 1862 in Forfar to parents Alexander Callander and Christina Jamieson. Alexander and Jane had the following six children:

 

GEN VII

  1. James Jamieson – born 28th May 1889, Forfar Chief Electrical & Mechanical Engineer for the Scottish Hydro, was knighted a Sir. Died in 1971, Bridge of Allan, Stirling.
  2. Christina Jamieson – born 13th November 1890, Forfar. Married David Fyfe McMath on the 6th August 1915 in Forfar. Christina was a Nurse and died on the 15th July 1977 at Semington, Wiltshire.
  3. Maggie Callander – born 5th June 1893, Forfar. Married Bertie Carson in her 80’s and died on the 24th April 1986 at Nairn, Moray.
  4. Jeannie Callander – born 6th August 1895, Forfar. Died in 1938 at Logie, Stirling.
  5. Agnes Law – born 1st February 1898, Forfar. Married James Kirkwood on the 10th March 1934. Died on the 13th January 1996 at Grantown on Spey, Moray.
  6. Jessie Reid Callander – born 30th December 1899, Forfar. Died in 1981, Bridge of Allan, Stirling.
James, Jean, Jane Cargill, Jessie, Meg, Alexander Cargill, Agnes & Christina

Alexander and Jane lived at Canmore Park, Forfar – which Alexander built with his father James Cargill. Alexander was a well know builder in  Forfar for over 30 years and built the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Forfar. Alexander died on the 10th August 1901 at Canmore Park. He died of Septic Peritonitis aged 40 years. The family story goes that he was operated on the kitchen table and sadly died. His brother Charles was the informant. Jane died on the 5th October 1938 at Sunnydene, Causeway Head, Logie, Stirling. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage aged 76 years. Her son James Jamieson Cargill was the informant. Alexander and Jean are buried at Newmonthill Cemetery in Forfar, grave H/287/2.

CALLANDER GENEALOGY

 

GEN I

James CALLANDER married Jean ANDERSON on the 26th July 1791 in Brechin, Angus. James was a Contractor by trade, and they had the following six children:

  1. Christian - Born on the 3rd April 1792, Brechin.
  2. Alexander - born on the 21st September 1793, Brechin.
  3. John - Born on the 4th November 1795, Brechin.
  4. David - Born on the 16th October 1797, Careston. Married Jean Whyte. Farmer 7 Contractor. Died in 1880.
  5. Mary - Born on the 30th November 1799, Careston.
  6. George - Born on the 16th July 1809, Careston.

 

GEN II

David CALLANDER was born on the 29th October 1797 in Careston to parents James Callander and Jean Anderson. David was a Farmer and Contractor by trade, and married Jean WHYTE, Hand Loom Weaver, circa 1820. Jean was born in 1799 to parents James WHYTE and Clementina FAIRWEATHER. David and Jean had the following eight children:

  1. James - Born on the 25th February 1821, Tannadice.
  2. John - Born in 1826, Farnell.
  3. Mary - Born in 1831, Forfar.
  4. Clementina - Born in 1835, Tannadice.
  5. Alexander - Born on the 14th June 1835, Tannadice. Married Christina Jamieson in 1859. General Labourer and Farmer. Died in 1913, Forfar.
  6. David - Born in 1838, Forfar.
  7. Elizabeth - Born in 1839, Forfar.
  8. William - Born in 1845, Rescobie.

David and Jean lived at Black Town Quilko, Rescobie in 1851, and then at 24 Dundee Road and 33 Dundee Road Forfar. Jean died on the 18th September 1871 at 33 Dundee Road, Forfar. She died from disease of the liver aged 73 years. David died on the 18th June 1880 at Dundee Road, Forfar. He died from senile decay aged 84 years.

 

GEN III

Alexander CALLANDER was born on the 14th June 1835 in Tannadice to parents David Callander and Jean Whyte. Alexander was a General Labourer and Farmer by trade and married Christina JAMIESON, Weaver, on the 12th August 1859 in Rattray. Christian Jamieson was born in 1833, Rattray to parents Peter Jamieson, Blacksmith and Rebecca Deuchars. Alexander and Christian had the following five children:

 

GEN IV

  1. David - Born on the 24th June 1859, Rattray. Carter.
  2. John - Born on the 6th December 1860, Forfar. Carter.
  3. Jean - Born on the 22nd June 1862, Forfar. Dressmaker. Married Alexander Cargill in 1887, Forfar. Died in 1938, Stirling.  See Cargill Genealogy.
  4. Isobella - Born on the 17th August 1864, Forfar.
  5. Margaret Ford - Born on the 9th October 1871, Forfar.

Alexander and Christian lived at Clayhills, Rattray, 46 East High Street and Dundee Loan, Forfar. Christian died on the 8th October 1892 at 6 Dundee Loan, Forfar. She died of a malignant leision of the stomach aged 56 years. Alexander married his second wife Agnes Martin in 1898, Forfar. Presumably Agnes died and he then married his third wife Nellie Robertson in 1905, Forfar. Alexander died on the 4th September 1913 at 6 Dundee Loan, Forfar. He died of pneumonia aged 78 years.
